Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy is part of the car-fit.org Terms of Service, which governs your use of the car-fit.org website (the “Site”). The Site is owned and operated by AARP. This Privacy Policy describes how AARP collects, uses, and shares your personal information such as your name, address, e-mail address, and phone number, any other information you provide through the Site, and information you may provide as a participant or volunteer in the CarFit program. This Privacy Policy contains other important information, such as how AARP may update this privacy policy and how you can contact AARP with questions or concerns.

The CarFit program is an educational program collaboratively developed by AARP, the American Automobile Association, Inc. (“AAA”) and the American Occupational Therapy Association (“AOTA”). Your access and use of the Site is your consent to allow AARP to share the information you provide through the Site with AAA and AOTA. If you do not consent to AARP sharing your information with AAA and AOTA do not provide any information through the Site.

  1. Why AARP Collects Your Information
  2. AARP collects information from or about you in order to:

    • Enroll you in CarFit events as a volunteer or participant;
    • Communicate with you and deliver information about the CarFit program as well as any other information you have requested from AARP or as a participant in the CarFit program.
    • Provide you with CarFit customer support;
    • Perform data analytics;
    • Enforce the CarFit Terms of Service;
    • To better understand the needs of CarFit program users and provide better service; and
    • Perform any other functions described to you at the time you provide information.
  3. Information AARP Collects
  4. AARP collects your contact information and, in some instance, your login credentials for the CarFit program to use in connection with the CarFit program. You may also be asked to complete a liability waiver form in connection with a CarFit event.

    Additionally, AARP may automatically collect certain standard information when you visit car-fit.org. This information may include data such as:

    • Your browser type, browser language, and computer operating system type;
    • Your Internet Protocol (IP) address, which is the number automatically assigned to your computer whenever you access the Internet;
    • Information collected through cookies, web beacons, and similar technologies;
      • A “cookie” is a piece of information a website sends to your computer while you are viewing the website that allows the site to recognize your computer each time you visit. You have the choice to set your browser to accept all cookies, reject all cookies, or notify you when a cookie is set. (Each browser is different, so check the "Help" menu of your browser to learn how to change your cookie preferences.) It is up to you whether to allow AARP to send you cookies. However, if you do not accept cookies from AARP, your ability to use some areas of the site could be limited.
      • Web beacons (sometimes called single-pixel GIFs or transparent GIFs) are small strings of code that provide a way for AARP to deliver a small graphic image (usually invisible) on a web page or in an email. These beacons are used for analytics, such as to count visitors to a webpage, determine if e-mails are have been opened by you, and similar functions.
      • Analytics tools allow us to measure and assess how users interact with car-fit.org and to assist us with analyzing and assessing the website. These services are provided by a third-party with whom we contract – Google Analytics – and may also use cookies and Web beacons as discussed above.   5. How We Share Your Information
  6. AARP, AAA, and AOTA each have access to your information to fulfill roles in the CarFit program. Your information is not added to the AARP, AAA or AOTA databases for use outside the CarFit program without your consent. Except as otherwise provided in this Privacy Policy, AARP does not sell, trade, or otherwise transfer your personally identifiable information to third parties for their use without your consent. Your information may, however, be shared as described below:

    • Volunteers and Program Managers. AARP, AAA and AOTA may each share your information with volunteers and program managers for use in connection with the CarFit program, such as to contact you about an event, schedule training, or follow-up with you or other customer service purposes.
    • Approved Vendors. . AARP, AAA and AOTA may each share your information with third parties to provide services in support of the CarFit program including, but not limited to, providing mailings to you.
    • Aggregate Data. AARP, AAA and AOTA may each share aggregate program statistics and other non-personally identifiable information with the media, government agencies, advertisers, and other third parties. These aggregate statistics will not allow anyone to identify your name or other personally identifiable information.
    • Pursuant to Legal Requirements. AARP, AAA and AOTA may disclose your information in response to a subpoena or similar investigative demand, a court order, or a request for cooperation from a law enforcement agency or other government agency; to establish or exercise the legal rights of AARP, AAA or AOTA to defend against legal claims; or as otherwise required by law.
    • To Protect The Website and Users. AARP, AAA and AOTA may each disclose your information when disclosure is necessary to investigate, prevent, or take action regarding illegal activity, suspected fraud or other wrongdoing; to protect and defend the rights, property, or safety of the CarFit program, CarFit program managers and CarFit volunteers, Site users, or others; or to enforce the car-fit.org Terms of Service or other agreements or policies.
  7. How AARP Keeps Your Information Secure
  8. AARP uses commercially reasonable physical, procedural, and technical security measures to help prevent unauthorized access to and improper use of the information AARP collects about you. For example, only authorized employees and authorized third parties are permitted to access personally identifiable information, and may do so only for lawful purposes. Despite these safeguards, no websites or Internet networks can be completely secure and none of AARP, AAA or AOTA can guarantee that your use of the Site will be completely safe or secure.

  9. Children's Privacy
  10. The Site is not intended for use by children under the age of 13 and AARP does not knowingly collect personally-identifiable information from such children. If a child under the age of 13 has provided AARP with personally identifiable information, AARP requests that a parent or guardian contact us so that the information can be identified and deleted.

  11. Do Not Track
  12. The Site does not contain third-party advertisements. AARP does not collect personally identifiable information about users’ online activities over time and across third-party websites and the Site does not process or respond to “Do Not Track” signals from your browser or other similar mechanisms.

  13. Site Interactive Features
  14. You may choose to participate in the interactive features of the Site, including but not limited to, message boards, comments, e-mail services and areas that allow uploading of user-generated content (“Site Interactive Features”). Please remember that your name and any information you may submit to Site Interactive Features may become public information that others may collect, circulate and use. AARP, AAA and AOTA cannot control the acts of others and you should exercise caution when deciding to disclose information about yourself or other through the Site Interactive Features. If you choose to voluntarily disclose information about yourself or others through the Site Interactive Features, that information will be considered public information and the terms of this Privacy Policy will not apply.

  15. Updates
  16. This Privacy Policy may be revised, modified, updated, and/or supplemented at any time and without prior notice. If this policy is revised, the new policy will be posted on the Site with a revised “last updated” date at the top of the policy. If any material changes are made that impacts how your personal information is collected, used, and/or shared, AARP will notify you by sending an email to the email address you most recently provided to AARP (unless you did not provide an email address) and/or by prominently posting notice of the changes on the Site.

  17. Opting Out
  18. From time to time, you may be send electronic newsletters, announcements, surveys or other information about the CarFit program. If you prefer not to receive any or all of these communications you may opt out by following the directions provided within the electronic newsletters and announcements.
